The
Official Whittling Chip wallet
card can be earned by Bear Cub Scouts by mastering the
"Knife Safety Rules" on this page. The object is to teach a boy that:
"A Cub Scout knife is an important tool. You can do many things
with its blades. The cutting blade is the one you will use most of the
time. With it you can make shavings and chips and carve all kinds of
things.
You must be very careful when you whittle or carve.
Take good care of your knife. Always remember that a knife is a tool,
not a toy. Use it with care so that you don't hurt yourself or ruin
what you are carving."
Note from Settummanque! on the
USE OF THE WHITTLIN' CHIP PATCH
The "Whitlin' Chip" is NOT considered an "official" BSA badge. The
only BSA item that is issued in connection with this skill is the pocket
card which is carried by the Cub Scout. That's why you cannot find it
illustrated in the official Insignia Guide nor in the Cub Scout Leader
Book.
Several local Councils, however, have either purchased commercially
or produced emblems (without the BSA indicia) or have designed their own
and had the BSA's Supply Division to create them for their Council's
usage (with the BSA's indicia). In those Councils, if the Council makes
the patches available for resell to units, then it is also considered an
"official" patch.
In MOST of the local Councils that I'm aware of which sells the
patch, the patches are considered TEMPORARY INSIGNIA and therefore goes
centered on the right pocket of the field uniform. It does NOT belong on
the right nor left pocket flap, because those locations are reserved for
other insignia: in the case of the Cub Scout, the National Summertime
Pack Award pin(s) belongs there.
So....
*Check with YOUR COUNCIL to see if they allow the Whitlin' Chip patch
to be worn on the uniform. Just because the patch is out there doesn't
mean that you can wear it on the BSA uniform anywhere EXCEPT on the
right pocket!
*Unless told by YOUR COUNCIL'S SCOUT EXECUTIVE, I would wear the
Whitlin' Chip patch centered on the right pocket of the Cub Scout
uniform. It doesn't go in the same place where over the span of next
year, you'll have to wear National Summertime Pack Award pins!!
Finally, the Whitlin' Chip Patch is NOT "transferable" to the Boy
Scout uniform. Remember the BSA considers both of those as "skills"
which are used in a step toward Cub Scout or Boy Scout advancement;
therefore, "steps" do not "rate a badge." For those whom want to argue
"instant recognition," the CARD provides instant and continual
recognition of the meeting of those skills. |
